“We’re looking somewhere on the edge of that donut. The team calls this area the torus and say this particular donut is as big as our entire solar system. We saw the accretion rate drop as it turned to a trickle over time.”Īlthough the event is too far away to see with the naked eye, scientists interpret Hubble’s data as coming from the very bright, hot, donut-shaped area of gas now swirling around the black hole. “We saw this early enough that we could observe it at these very intense black hole accretion stages. Our program is different in that it is designed to look at a few tidal events over a year to see what happens,” says Peter Maksym of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA) in a media release. You get maybe a few observations at the beginning of the disruption when it’s really bright. “Typically, these events are hard to observe. It’s a network of ground telescopes which watch the sky for violent, variable, and transient events across the universe.ĭespite being 300 million light years away, scientist say it’s still close enough to Earth and bright enough for the Hubble Telescope to use its ultraviolet spectroscopy on this donut-making event. This particular event, called AT2022dsb, was first observed on March 1st, 2022 by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN or “Assassin”). Study authors say a galaxy with a supermassive black hole at the center shreds a star in this way only a few times every 100,000 years. The stellar remnants are pulled into a donut-shaped ring around the black hole, and will eventually fall into the black hole, unleashing a tremendous amount of light and high-energy radiation.Ĭredits: NASA, ESA, Leah Hustak (STScI) How often do black holes turn stars into donuts? The star is shredded as tidal forces pull it apart. The star’s outer gasses are pulled into the black hole’s gravitational field. A normal star passes near a supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy. This sequence of artist’s illustrations shows how a black hole can devour a bypassing star. Scientists call these stellar homicides a “tidal disruption event.” While that doesn’t sound so violent, the NASA team explains that black holes are “messy eaters,” balancing out the star matter they pull in by blowing out just as much. These include hydrogen and carbon just to name a few. Astronomers used Hubble’s powerful ultraviolet sensitivity to study the light and chemicals coming from the doomed star. The new findings from March 2022 spotted a black hole approximately 300 million light years away pulling in a local star in the galaxy ESO 583-G004. The biggest black holes are called “supermassive,” and scientists believe they sit at the heart of many galaxies.Black holes are technically invisible, so scientists really on the behavior of nearby stars to know they’re there.A black hole’s gravitational pull is so strong even light can’t escape.Black holes often form when large stars collapse and cause a supernova. Here’s what you need to know about black holes: Black holes are notorious for gobbling up nearby objects in space, and the Hubble Telescope has just spotted another cosmic meal in progress! Researchers from NASA are revealing their findings after a supermassive black hole shredded a nearby star - turning it into a “donut” the size of our solar system!

Once everyone is finished adding up their score, deal another round. If a player has any cards left in their hand when the round ends, they add up those points and subtract that number from their total score. At the end of the round, each player counts up the points in the melds they played and adds that number to their total score. How to win at Gin Rummy every time Counting cards, much like in other card games, can. Gin Rummy can be adapted to 2-4 players by changing the starting deal amount. Can Gin Rummy be played with 3 players Yes. Rummy also has more specific conditions for winning. Continue playing like this until one player runs out of cards and ends the round. Rummy can be played by 2-6 players, whereas Gin Rummy is suitable for 2-4 players. At the end of a player’s turn, they must discard a card from their hand that’s different from the card they picked up at the beginning of their turn. If the ace is played as a high card, it counts as 15 points. Face cards count as 10 points, and ace through 9 count as 5 points. The basic idea is that you build three or four cards following this principle while discarding the cards that aren't useful to create your hand. Rummy games typically involve the player matching cards of the same rank or in a number sequence with the same suit. When a player lays down a meld, they score points for each of the cards played. Gin Rummy is a variant of Rummy games that was created in 1909. This also includes 3 or more sequential cards of the same suit, such as the 10, Jack, and Queen of hearts. When your hand is under 10 points you can knock to end the round get your hand all the way. Create a hand with lower points than your opponent and earn a higher game score. This includes 3-4 matching cards, such as 3 Aces, 4 Jacks, or 3 2s. Gin Rummy is one of the most popular forms of Rummy Try to reduce the points in your 10-card hand to as close to zero as you can by forming melds and eliminating deadwood. For example, if one player has a meld of three 5s on the table, another player could lay down the fourth 5 on their turn. After a player picks up a card (or cards), they can lay down any melds from their hand. Players can also lay down cards that can be played off of another player’s meld. A meld can either be 3 or 4 cards of the same rank, like three 8s, or 3 or more sequential cards in the same suit, like 10, jack, queen, and king of diamonds. After drawing a card, players have a chance to lay down any melds in their hand. If a player takes a card from the discard pile, they must pick up any other cards that are on top of it, and they’re required to play that card in a meld during that turn. Option two is to take a card from the face-up discard pile. Option one is to take the top card on the face-down stock pile. On a player’s turn, they have two options. The player to the left of the dealer goes first. Place the leftover cards in a face-down pile in the middle of the playing area, and flip the top card face-up next to it. If you’re playing with 3 or more players, everyone gets 7 cards each. If you’re playing with 2 players, each player gets 13 cards. To start the game, have one player deal everyone their hand, starting with the player to their left and moving clockwise. The goal of the game is to form combinations of 3 or more cards, called melds, to score more points than your opponents. Rummy 500 is a variation on Rummy that can be played with 2 to 4 players. No other card exemplifies this aspect of our game plan better than Near-Death Experience. We often rely on the survival of one piece or the resolution of one spell to claim victory, and losing it often spells our demise. One aspect of Selenia that makes me hesitant is how high risk/reward she is. While swapping life totals gives us a redundant path to victory, that's not the only way that Selenia can seize a win. This card not only lets us drain our life total, but it can also turn Selenia into a threat with commander damage. Unspeakable Symbol is probably most well-known as a signature card for Marchesa, the Black Rose, but being able to trade life for power is never a bad option. Wall of Blood and Hex Parasite both appear in about half of the listed decks, but another option only appears in 8 of the 121. Luckily for us, Selenia isn't the only option we have when it comes to draining our life total quickly. These effects only target one opponent, but I think the added political element makes it worth it. We also have some repeatable effects on permanents, such as Soul Conduit and Magus of the Mirror. Repay is especially strong for our strategy, since it's able to hit each opponent, while Reverse lets us play politics and leverage each player's life total according to that player's threat. Repay in Kind and Reverse the Sands, while expensive, are the hardest of these to interact with by being sorceries. Surprisingly, there is a decent density of these effects in the game, and each one makes it into nearly 70% of Selenia lists. Most of the prominent game-ending effects for the deck revolve around switching our life totals with another player. This puts our opponent's life total in the red-zone, and from there it should be trivial to finish them off. Life is a GameĪs I touched on a bit earlier, our life total is this deck's ultimate resource, but how do we use it? Activating Selenia's ability over and over lets us drain ourselves down to near zero, and then we swap life totals with an opponent. Why would we do that though? Selenia's whole gameplan revolves around the concept of life ultimately being a resource to further our own goals. We can activate her ability over and over again to drain our own life total. The real kicker for Selenia's unique gameplan is the cost of her ability: "Pay 2 Life". While she doesn't have the greatest stats-to-cost ratio, she is still a resilient flying threat. "Pay 2 life: Return Selenia, Dark Angel to its owner's hand."įirst and foremost, this ability lets us protect Selenia, Dark Angel from nearly all forms of removal. However, the more my friend explained how she worked, the more the idea latched onto my mind. At a glance, she seemed like a color-shifted, worse Wydwen, the Biting Gale. Value? What value could this commander possibly bring? A 3/3 flyer isn't great for it's cost, and her other ability seems very lackluster. That was until one of my good friends explained her value. At first glance, I pushed the thought of even attempting to brew Selenia out of my mind. Hailing from Dominaria, our newest entrant offers a very. Rise to the occasion and meet our newest entrant in our series: Selenia, Dark Angel! Selenia, Dark Angel She only has 121 decks currently listed of EDHREC, and she is the 11th most played black-white commander. Pulling from the ever-present themes of self-sacrifice and "greatness at any cost," this week's commander is dying to get a chance to shine. So far, only one commander with black has been featured in this series, and I figured what better way to begin to balance the colors than to pick a legend from "the black set," Torment. It's been too long, but I'm glad to be back! In this installment of the Underdog's Corner, I try and equalize the featured commander's color balance. Each article makes the argument for a single commander that deserves more play, as well as highlighting key cards and synergies. This article is Round 9 of the Underdog's Corner, a series spotlighting various lesser-used commanders and their place in the format. When the room is clear, run through it and head through to the next area. Several soldiers are positioned near the door, so toss one inside to clear them out. If you have any grenades left, now is a great time to use them. There are a lot of Helghast in the next room, so use your Tactical Echo to locate them before moving in. When the area is clear, move down and head through the door where the turret was located. If they cause too much trouble, retreat back up the stairs and regroup. There are soldiers and a turret below, so surprise them for a bit of an advantage. After you cross the bridge, you’ll come out on a platform. Use the access panel to use the bridge, but before crossing, take the Helghast soldiers down on the other side. Watch out for drones patrolling the area. Go through the door and head to the right. Be aware of a drone that will attack you from behind. Order your OWL to hack the security panel to open the door. When the hatch is open, run towards it to zip line down.Īfter you zip line down, you’ll be in the maintenance section. Go inside and use the access panel to open the oxygen filtration hatch. Continue on to your next objective, which is just across the catwalk in the next room. There’s a room you passed with a computer system inside. When all the threats are down, head back to where you first entered the large warehouse area. Order your OWL to hack and disable the Spider Mine Pods and use the secondary fire mode on your LSR 44 to disable the solder’s energy shields. There are multiple soldiers with energy shields and more pesky Spider Mine Pods. Drop down through the floor and perform a melee attack on the soldier below.Īs you move forward, you’ll come upon what appears to be a large warehouse with catwalks and a floor level below. When the room is clear, use the access panel to open the next door. Either use the secondary fire mode on your LSR 44 or have your OWL disable the shields, then kill the Helghast soldiers. You’ll encounter more soldiers with energy shields. Once the room is clear, order your OWL to hack the computer system and go through the door. This is done by swiping left on the touchpad and ordering it to attack with L1. Pro Tip: You can also disable energy shields by setting your OWL to stun mode. Use the secondary fire mode to disable the lone soldier’s shield and then switch back to your primary fire mode to finish him off. By pressing down on your D-Pad, you will use its secondary fire mode, which can destroy enemy energy shields. Head towards your objective and use the access panel to open the door. Try to give the order from a safe distance. Order your OWL to hack the three Spider Mine Pods, but beware, they dispense Spider Mines on proximity. Use the on-screen controls to navigate through the obstacles. Jump off the platform to start your free fall. Go through the door and head across the platform. There won’t be any resistance to begin, so start moving towards your objective and have your OWL hack the computer system. Once you breach, you should be back to normal controls. Keep an eye on the screen for instructions on how to boost or brake as well. Use the left stick to move forward, backwards and side-to-side while the right stick can be used to move your head. Based on TerminalMontage, 100% Accurate Fox is a hilarious creation that seeks to create a character similar to Melee’s Fox while adding many traits that make him overpowered. Well, 100% Accurate Fox has got you covered. Okay, those characters were nice and dandy, but what about a character for those Melee players. I definitely wouldn’t be disappointed if this character was in Rivals of Aether. Mollo is my favorite character from the workshop. Mollo’s creator continues to update this character constantly, recently adding the ability to throw bombs in the air. He has a sparking antenna that expresses his explosive techniques and bright wings that pop out during his up special. Mollo’s moth-like shape is used greatly in his character design. The main drawback Mollo has is his lack of kill options with the only quick kill option being his uptilt. You have to be careful, however, since Mollo can get hurt by his own bombs. Mollo can use the bombs for ledge traps and setups by pushing the bomb with his other attacks. Mollo has some great aerials as well, although he is meant to be played more strategically. Instead of planting bombs, Mollo can throw an array of four different bombs with his Smash attack and detonate them with his flare gun side special. One of the most popular characters in the workshop, Mollo, is a moth that has a playstyle similar to Snake. I never thought I would ever say Obama is one of the best characters in a fighting game, but here we are. What I first thought of as a joke turned out to be a great character. Obama’s move-set is well-balanced and plays smoothly which makes him a character I would seriously consider playing with over and over again. The number of funny details in each of Obama’s attacks and animations, such as using the American flag as a weapon or having an anime-like run animation, shows that a lot of thought went into making this character both a meme and a serious character. The creator is fully aware of this character’s meme status and indulges this in the animation. For his specials, Obama has a wide array of projectiles such as a grenade, a gun, and a sniper rifle. Obama is a fast character who has quick aerials and tilts that have a decent amount of distance to them. That’s right, someone made a full-fledge Barack Obama character for Rivals of Aether, and to my surprise, he’s fun to play. Here we’ll be reviewing the best, the worst, and the funniest characters from the workshop. And, of course, there are creators that just make joke characters to give us a quick laugh. There are a few original characters that seem to fit perfectly in Rivals which shows off the creator’s knowledge in video game design. Now, most of the submissions involve other well-known characters with sprites pulled from other games. Anyone with knowledge of game design could create and put whatever character they want into Rivals. But soon the number of submissions would grow exponentially. At the start, the workshop only had a few characters that were promoted for the release of the workshop. Have you ever wanted a moth creature, Fox from Melee, Duane, and the former President to duke it out in Smash?! Well, guess what? It’s your lucky day! On September 18, Rivals of Aether, a Smash Bros. Fernando Mendez | Posted on October 12, 2019 Speaking of which, the Stratagems give you some powerful abilities to work with. All in all these are incredibly powerful effects in Boarding Actions and we haven’t even gotten to the Stratagems, which offer more fantastic effects. This can be incredibly good on maps with hard-to-reach objectives and for forcing elite opponents to commit to going wider than they’d like. And Finally there’s Cybernematode Infestation, which lets you select any objective on the board – you control that objective until your opponent controls it. Datagheist Howl prevents your opponent from gaining CP in the first battle round, which can be brutal to some game plans. This is great considering your deployment is gonna get plenty crowded at the beginning of the game and it can be combined with Ill-o’-The-Will Impulse to pull off some insane pregame moves and combinations. These are all very strong, starting off with Schematographic Omnipotence, which gives each of your units a 6” move at the beginning of the game. The other interesting thing here is you don’t get enhancements in this army instead you get Technoarcane Blessings, which are round one/pregame effects that help you get an edge over your opponent. So we’re looking at Dark Commune, Cultists, Accursed Cultists, and importantly, Traitor Guardsmen, a unit that’s definitely worth considering here. Here’s the schtick: You get 3 extra Troops slots to work with but everything in your army has to be a CULTIST unit. Last week Games Workshop released rules for running Vashtorr’s devotees in Boarding Actions games, and Surprise! – the rules for this army are actually incredibly strong and this particular brigade of morons might be one of the strongest forces you can field. Let’s start with the better of the two forces. Upon booting the software, you'll get the option to add the folder containing the photos you would like to resize. Batch image processing, printer presets, and an intuitive interface are the highlight features of this app. Using software to resize your photos for certain formats, whilst also enhancing their clarity, wouldn't be a bad call, and ON1 Resize AI has got you covered on that front. It either comes out overly stretched, doesn't use the space properly - leaving you with white bars around it - or, in rarer cases, the result turns out as it should. More often than not, there are issues pertaining to how the photo fits on a page. Failing to heed those elements usually results in you having to redo the process, wasting ink for carelessness. For instance, you have to account for the page you're printing on, the contents you want to imprint, and the printer device itself. ON1 Resize AI 2022 is on sale now for $99 (about £80/AU$140) – but HOLD ON! If you already own the previous ON1 Resize 2022 (non-AI) plug-in, this will be free update, and if you already own ON1 Photo RAW 2022, ON1 Resize AI 2022 will be integrated with your software in a future free update. When printing photos, you have to be aware of a few things, or else the result will be less than satisfactory. ON1 Resize AI 2022 pricing and availability This is perhaps the first time we can say that image upsizing is genuinely worth doing as a workflow routine rather than an occasional emergency measure. Our remarks may sound like faint praise, but with a good quality digital image from a DSLR or mirrorless camera, say, ON1 Resize AI’s results are truly spectacular. On our test machine, resizing an image could take 1-3 minutes, depending on the size of the original. ON1 Resize AI 2022 is spectacularly effective with edges and natural textures, but less so with text, where you’re probably not going to be able to read anything on the edge of illegibility in the original. We found that if text was too small to make out properly in the original, ON1 Resize couldn't really help much. ON1's example of text enlargement is impressive, but the text is still legible in the 'before' version. ON1 says that the process can remove JPEG artefacts, but we found the opposite with one 1200 pixel wide press image we tried to enlarge – it exaggerated some edge effects not really obvious in the original. The tests we did with smaller-sensor cameras were less successful, as these have digital artefacts and imperfectons that the resizing process may either exaggerate or smooth over somewhat. Lower-quality images don’t fare so well. The edge sharpness is preserved at the larger size, as we would expect, but the added textural detail is quite amazing – and realistic. The results can be quite spectacular, even hard to believe. We were sent an early access release to try out, and here’s a quick run-down of what we found: (Image credit: Rod Lawton) (opens in new tab) ON1 Resize AI 2022 first impressions The increased sharpness and detail in the ON1 enlargement (right) compared to the magnified original (left) is remarkable. Here's a 2x enlargement (2x on both sides, so 4x overall) of a 4.6-megapixel JPEG from a Sigma DP1. Unlike Adobe's Super Resolution tool, ON1 Resize AI can work on JPEGs and TIFFs, and it offers a range of magnifications, not just Adobe's 2x 'take it or leave it' approach (and huge DNG output files). It also has special printing features, such as Tiling for large-scale prints or murals, ‘Gallery Wraps’ for adding reflected or stretched ‘wings to the edges of a photo without losing any image area, the ability to ‘fill’ different print sizes and even ‘soft-proofing’ with different printer presets to judge the amount of sharpening to apply (another feature in the software). You can use it to resize individual images or batch processing a whole series. ON1 Resize AI 2022 can be used as a standalone tool, or as a plugin or external editor for your regular software. ON1 is also suggesting Resize AI 2022 could be used to make high quality still images or prints from video frame captures. We’ve got lots of photos shot on 6MP Nikon D50s or 8MP Canon DSLRs from years back, and we’re sure lots of other photographers have too. It’s also designed to breath new life back into photos taken on older, lower resolution cameras. |
